How to Back Up Your UniFi Protect Footage to a UNAS-Pro (And Why RAID Matters)

Let’s talk about something super important that not enough UniFi users are doing: backing up your Protect video footage. Whether it’s security incidents or just everyday moments worth saving, having a backup outside your NVR is crucial.

Until recently, you could only manually export footage to a UNAS-Pro, but now there's good news: UniFi Protect now supports automatic event-based archiving to a UNAS-pro.

What’s New: Automatic Event Archiving

With one of the latest UniFi Protect updates, you can now automatically archive events (like person detections) from selected cameras directly to your UNAS-Pro.

You’ll need to:

1. Create a shared folder on your UNAS-Pro (e.g., “UniFi-Protect-Backup”) and assign a quota if desired.
2. Go to your Protect device’s Settings > System > Archiving, then:

• Add a new account (choose NAS, not Google Drive/Dropbox)
• Enter the IP, username, password, and select the shared folder

1. Enable continuous archiving, choose the cameras, and select detection types (e.g., Person)
2. Apply changes, and you’re all set!

But Wait, Is Your UNAS-Pro Using RAID?

Backing up footage is one thing. Keeping it safe even if a drive fails? That’s where RAID comes in.

If you're using the Ubiquiti UNAS-Pro, you can configure RAID for data protection:

• RAID 5: Protects against 1 drive failure, gives you the most usable space
• RAID 6: Protects against 2 drive failures
• RAID 10: Fastest and most resilient—handles multiple failures if they’re not in the same mirror pair

My recommendation? RAID 10 if you want speed and rock-solid protection, or RAID 5 if you want the best balance of storage and safety.

Final Thoughts

Backing up to a UNAS-Pro just got way easier with UniFi Protect’s new auto-archiving feature, but don’t forget, a good NAS setup also needs proper RAID. If you're using a UNAS-Pro, you're already in great shape.
