24V Passive PoE in WISP Networks: Why It Still Matters

It remains popular because it is simple, cost-effective, and widely supported across common CPE and backhaul radios. The key is knowing when 24V passive PoE is the right choice, and how to deploy it safely.

What 24V Passive PoE Really Means

24V passive PoE is a fixed voltage power method delivered over Ethernet pairs, typically pins 4,5 positive and 7,8 return. Unlike 802.3af or 802.3at, there is no negotiation handshake. The device either supports 24V passive input, or it does not.

This matters because passive power is straightforward and efficient for outdoor radio deployments, but it also requires you to be intentional about device compatibility.

Why 24V Passive PoE Is Still Common in WISP Builds

1) Many popular WISP radios still use 24V passive input

A lot of field proven radios are designed around 24V passive PoE, which keeps installs consistent for technicians and reduces surprises in the truck.

Examples that explicitly list passive PoE input on Flytec:

  • Loco5AC-US lists the power method as passive PoE with a supported voltage range around 22 to 27V DC.

The takeaway is not that the injector alone is enough, but that the injector choice, grounding, and cable strategy are part of keeping truck rolls down.

The Tradeoffs You Need to Understand

No negotiation means you must verify compatibility

Because 24V passive has no handshake, it is easy to damage equipment if someone plugs the wrong device into a passive PoE feed. This is one of the main reasons some networks prefer 802.3af and 802.3at in mixed vendor environments.

Practical rule:

If the device does not explicitly support passive 24V input, do not assume it will work.

Power distance and voltage drop still apply

Long cable runs create voltage drop. Even if a device supports 24V passive, marginal voltage at the far end can cause reboots and unstable links. This is why clean terminations and realistic cable length planning matter, especially on tower climbs where service visits are expensive.

Standardization reduces mistakes

Many WISPs standardize on a short list of radios and a short list of injectors, so the field team is not guessing. That is one reason 24V passive continues to be used. It is consistent when your gear set is consistent.

When 24V Passive PoE Is the Right Choice

24V passive is a good fit when:

  • You are deploying radios that explicitly support 24V passive input, such as Loco5AC-US or PBE-5AC-Gen2-US
  • You want a simple CPE power method with low-cost injectors like POE-24-12W-G or POE-24-24W-G.
  • Your deployments are repeatable, and your technicians follow a consistent standard

When You Should Consider Moving Away from It

You should consider moving away from 24V passive PoE when the device you are powering specifically requires 802.3af or 802.3at standard PoE. The power method has to match the device. If the device does not support 802.3af or 802.3at, using a standard PoE switch or injector will not make it work.

You may want 802.3af or 802.3at when:

  • You have mixed device types and want negotiation to reduce risk 
  • You are powering higher draw gear that benefits from standardized PoE budgets 
  • You need a more uniform enterprise style edge design that matches indoor switching
