Dream Machine Pro, Cloud Gateway Max or Dream Router 7. Which UniFi Cloud Gateway Should You Choose?
Published by Juan David Ramirez on 15th Apr 2026
Hi there, I’m Juan David, Tech Support at Flytec. When you first dive into the UniFi ecosystem it quickly becomes clear that a UniFi Cloud Gateway is at the heart of everything. It’s the brain that runs your network, your security cameras, door access and VoIP. The challenge is figuring out which Cloud Gateway fits your needs, especially now that Ubiquiti offers a desktop Dream Router 7 (UDR7), a midrange Cloud Gateway Max (UCG-Max) and a rack mountable Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro). As a tech support engineer at Flytec, I spend a lot of my day guiding clients through these choices, so in this article I’m going to break down the key differences and help you decide.
What does a UniFi Cloud Gateway do?
A UniFi Cloud Gateway is more than just a router. It runs UniFi OS, giving you the Network, Protect, Access, Talk and Connect applications in one place. Each Cloud Gateway also includes a firewall, VPN server and SDWAN features out of the box; there are no recurring licenses. UniFi controllers manage your switches, access points and surveillance cameras while providing security features like layer-7 firewalls, content filtering and intrusion prevention.
The main differences between the current models come down to throughput, port speeds, integrated WiFi and storage options. Let’s look at each Cloud Gateway individually.
Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro)– rackmount power for larger networks
The UniFi Dream Machine Pro is a 1U rack Cloud Gateway built for high capacity environments. It can manage over 100 UniFi devices and serve 1,000+ simultaneous clients, making it ideal for large homes, SMBs or branch offices with many access points and IP cameras. Key features include:
- High speed ports: The UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+ WAN port plus a 10 Gbps SFP+ LAN port alongside eight Gigabit RJ45 ports. This allows high throughput uplinks to your core switch or ISP while leaving plenty of ports for LAN devices.
- Strong security: It provides stateful and application aware firewalls with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), content filtering and intrusion prevention. With threat management enabled, it still achieves 3.5 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput, so it won’t bottleneck a multi-gig internet connection.
- Storage bay for NVR: A 3.5inch HDD slot lets you add your own hard drive for UniFi Protect recordings. Many users install surveillance grade drives to turn the Cloud Gateway into a full NVR.
- High availability options: Dual WAN support and VRRP-based “shadow mode” allow you to pair two UDM-Pros for failover. It also supports additional power redundancy via a UniFi SmartPower supply.
However, the UDM-Pro doesn’t include PoE ports, so you still need a PoE switch or injectors for cameras and access points, and its rackmount size may be overkill for small offices. For those wanting 10 Gbps networking, high client capacity and a built-in NVR, the UDM-Pro is the obvious choice.
Cloud Gateway Max (UCG-Max) – compact multi-gig Cloud Gateway
The Cloud Gateway Max is a compact desktop Cloud Gateway built for offices or power users who need multi-gig wired networking but don’t require integrated WiFi. According to Ubiquiti’s spec sheet, it manages 30+ UniFi devices and 300+ users. Highlights include:
- Multi-gig ports: The UCG-Max has five 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports, any of which can be configured as WAN or LAN. This supports link aggregation and multiWAN load balancing. Its IDS/IPS throughput is 2.3 Gbps, offering plenty of headroom for highspeed connections.
- Flexible storage: The Cloud Gateway accepts an NVMe SSD of up to 2 TB. The UCG-Max includes an internal NVMe slot but does not have 10 Gbps ports, it provides five 2.5 Gbps ports with multi-WAN failover and no PoE, so a PoE switch is required for access points.
- Small form factor: At just 5.6” × 5” × 1.2” , the UCG-Max fits on a desk and can mount magnetically to a wall. That makes it well suited to retail stores, clinics or remote offices where rack space is limited.
- Strong security and SDWAN: Like all UniFi Cloud Gateways, it supports application aware firewalls, content filtering and license-free SDWAN with Site Magic VPN, plus support for IPSec, OpenVPN, WireGuard and L2TP.
In testing, reviewers found the UCG-Max delivers over 2 Gbps real-world throughput and performs comparably to larger Cloud Gateways. Because it lacks WiFi and PoE, you’ll pair it with UniFi access points and switches, but it offers a cost effective way to build a highspeed wired network without the bulk of a rack unit.
Dream Router 7 (UDR7) – WiFi 7 Cloud Gateway for homes and small businesses
The Dream Router 7 combines a gateway, network controller and WiFi 7 access point in one sleek tower. It’s perfect for small offices or smart homes where simplicity matters. Key features:
- Integrated Wi‑Fi 7: Tri‑band Wi‑Fi 7 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be) with 2×2 MU‑MIMO, covering 160 m² (1 750 ft²) and throughput up to 5.7 Gbps (6 GHz), 4.3 Gbps (5 GHz) and 688 Mbps (2.4 GHz)
- Power and ports: Supports 30+ UniFi devices and 300+ users. Includes four 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports (one PoE) and one 10 Gbps SFP+ port; default WAN ports are a 10 Gbps SFP+ and a 2.5 GbE RJ45. IDS/IPS throughput is 2.3 Gbps
- Built‑in storage and PoE: Comes with a pre‑installed 64 GB microSD card and a microSD slot for expansion. One 2.5 GbE port provides PoE output of 15.4 W
- Security and SD‑WAN: Includes the same stateful firewall, layer‑7 filtering, DPI, intrusion prevention and license‑free SD‑WAN support
The UDR7 offers modern Wi-Fi 7 and multi-gig connectivity into a compact platform, while its 2×2 radio design makes it an ideal fit for smaller offices, home offices or residential environments.
