10G for Small Businesses with MikroTik: When SFP+ Is Worth It

In reality, 10G is one of the simplest ways to remove network bottlenecks, especially when you have a file server, NAS backups, multiple access points, cameras, or heavy internal traffic. 

MikroTik makes 10G realistic for smaller budgets because you can add SFP+ where it matters most, without rebuilding the entire network. 

This post explains when SFP+ is worth it, what to upgrade first, and which MikroTik part numbers are commonly used in small business 10G builds. 

What SFP+ Actually Solves 

SFP+ is just the port type. The real benefit is getting a clean 10G uplink between the parts of your network that move the most data. 

Common bottlenecks in small business networks: 

  • A NAS or server feeding multiple users at once  
  • Virtualization hosts pushing backups  
  • High resolution camera systems recording to an NVR  
  • Multiple WiFi access points feeding into a single 1G uplink  
  • Inter VLAN traffic between segments such as office, guest, cameras, and phones  

If your bottleneck is inside the network, upgrading ISP speed will not fix it. That is where 10G helps. 

When 10G Is Worth It 

1) You have a NAS or file server used by multiple people 

If 5 to 20 users are accessing the same file share, 1G gets saturated fast. A 10G uplink from the NAS to the switch usually gives the biggest improvement. 

Signs you need it: 

  • File transfers slow down during business hours  
  • Backups take too long and overlap with work time  
  • Large CAD, video, or design files are common  

2) You have a lot of cameras or a busy NVR 

Camera traffic adds up quickly. Even if each camera is only a few Mbps, 20 to 60 cameras plus viewing traffic can push a 1G link into constant congestion. 

A 10G backbone between the camera switch and the core switch often prevents lag, dropouts, and recording issues. 

3) Your WiFi is fast but the uplink is not 

Modern WiFi can move a lot of traffic, but if your access switch uplinks to the core at 1G, you can create a ceiling that users will feel. 

If you have multiple high performance access points, a 10G uplink from the access switch to the core switch is often worth it. 

4) You are doing inter VLAN routing at the core 

If your router or core is doing VLAN routing for cameras, phones, staff, and guest networks, that inter VLAN traffic can become a bottleneck. A router with SFP+ uplinks, or a design that keeps routing at a higher capacity point, can help. 

When 10G Is Not Worth It Yet 

  • You only have a handful of users and minimal local file transfer  
  • Your heaviest traffic is only internet, and your ISP is well under 1G  
  • Your NAS and servers only have 1G ports and you are not upgrading them  
  • Cabling and patching need basics fixed first  

A good rule is to upgrade the backbone only when you have a real throughput problem or you are building for growth. 

The Smart Way to Upgrade: Add 10G Only Where It Matters 

A common small business approach looks like this: 

  1. Add a 10G core switch  
  1. Connect NAS or servers to the core at 10G  
  1. Uplink access switches to the core at 10G  
  1. Keep desktops on 1G unless there is a real reason to upgrade  

This gives you most of the benefit with minimal disruption.

  • CRS309-1G-8S+IN for a compact 8 port SFP+ 10G core or aggregation switch.  
  • CRS326-24S+2Q+RM for larger fiber aggregation with many SFP+ ports and high throughput switching.  
  • CRS305-1G-4S+IN for a small, fanless 4 port SFP+ switch in tight spaces.  

Routing and core focused 

  • CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS for environments that need strong routing performance with many 10G SFP+ ports and 25G uplinks.  
  • CCR2116-12G-4S+ when routing, VPN, and inter VLAN traffic are the real bottleneck and you still want SFP+ uplinks.  
  • RB5009UG+S+IN as a smaller core router option that still includes a 10G SFP+ cage.  

Tip: If you mainly need switching, pick a CRS. If you need heavy routing, VPN, or lots of inter VLAN traffic, look at a CCR. 

Fiber vs DAC vs RJ45 for 10G 

SFP+ gives you flexibility: 

  • DAC (Direct attach cable) cables for short rack connections, simple and cost effective  
  • Fiber modules for longer runs between rooms or closets  
  • RJ45 SFP+ modules for copper when needed, but watch heat and distance limits  

For short rack links, a DAC is usually the cleanest option. A common example is XS+DA0001 for a 1 meter SFP+ direct attach cable.  

Bottom Line 

SFP+ is worth it for small businesses when there is real internal traffic, not just internet usage. If the network has a NAS, many cameras, multiple access points, server traffic, or growing VLAN segmentation, a 10G backbone can remove common bottlenecks and create a cleaner upgrade path.
